Europe is characterised by the diversity of peoples (including ethnic minorities), traditions, cultures, and national and regional identities which, as a whole, entail different levels of social (and, consequently, economic) development. The mobility of citizens, migration and the media contribute to this diversity. In the case of Portugal, this diversity is further amplified by its relationship with Portuguese-speaking countries and by the heritage and cultural diversity brought by these diverse peoples. The linguistic dimension, which, on the one hand, links Europe to non-European Portuguese-speaking countries through Portugal and, on the other hand, serves as a translational link to other languages and cultures, notably European, is therefore of particular relevance in the European context. However, even though the European Union underlines that this diversity and the opportunities that it brings, pillars of the \u2018European Project\u2019, should be recognized and encouraged, diversity, including linguistic, raises several social challenges, including iniquity and social inequalities. The Biennial Conference of the Centre of Linguistics of the University of Porto, on the theme of \u2018Identity, memory, heritage and diversity: Understanding the role of Portuguese in the world\u2019, aims to contribute to the understanding of the role of Portuguese in Europe and in the world, and investigate its interaction with other languages. Additionally, the conference aims to discuss its influence on heritage, memory, identity, integration and translation and linguistic and cultural interaction, so as to contribute to promoting inclusive, egalitarian, equitable and sustainable societies, in full respect for diversity.
The Centre of Linguistics of the University of Porto (CLUP) calls for original research in the area of Language Sciences under the general theme of the conference. Work in all areas of theoretical and applied linguistics, as well as interdisciplinary areas, will be accepted for presentation, including, but not exclusively:
– Applied Psycholinguistics
– Discourse and Pragmatics
– Historical Linguistics and Linguistic Historiography
– Morphology and Lexis
– Phonology
– Semantics
– Specialized communication (including intermodal and intercultural communication)
– Syntax
– Other \u00e1reas of Language Sciences, including, but not limited to:
* Language Didactics
* Computational Linguistics
* Corpus Linguistics
Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be submitted via the conference system: https:\/\/ocs.letras.up.pt\/index.php\/bcclup\/CLUP2023\/author\/submit<\/a>. Please note that the abstracts should not include identifying data. All abstracts will be subject to double blind peer-reviewing.

A Europa \u00e9 caracterizada pela diversidade de povos (incluindo minorias \u00e9tnicas), tradi\u00e7\u00f5es, culturas e identidades nacionais e regionais que, globalmente, comportam diferentes n\u00edveis de desenvolvimento social (e, consequentemente, econ\u00f3mico). A mobilidade de cidad\u00e3os, os fluxos migrat\u00f3rios e os media acentuam essa diversidade, que, no caso de Portugal, \u00e9, ainda, amplificada pela sua rela\u00e7\u00e3o com os pa\u00edses lus\u00f3fonos e pela heran\u00e7a e diversidade cultural aportada por esses povos diversos. A dimens\u00e3o lingu\u00edstica, que, por um lado, liga a Europa aos povos falantes de portugu\u00eas atrav\u00e9s de Portugal, e, por outro, serve de elo de transla\u00e7\u00e3o para outras l\u00ednguas e culturas, nomeadamente europeias, assume, por isso, especial preponder\u00e2ncia no contexto europeu. Por\u00e9m, n\u00e3o obstante o facto de a Uni\u00e3o Europeia defender que esta diversidade e as suas oportunidades, pilares do \u201cProjeto europeu\u201d, dever\u00e3o ser reconhecidas e incentivadas, a diversidade, incluindo lingu\u00edstica, representa v\u00e1rios desafios sociais, entre os quais situa\u00e7\u00f5es de iniquidade e desigualdades sociais. O Congresso Bienal do Centro de Lingu\u00edstica da Universidade do Porto, subordinado ao tema \u201cIdentidade, mem\u00f3ria, heran\u00e7a e diversidade: Compreender o papel do portugu\u00eas no mundo\u201d, tem como objetivo central contribuir para a compreens\u00e3o do papel da l\u00edngua portuguesa na Europa e no mundo, e da sua intera\u00e7\u00e3o com as demais l\u00ednguas, bem como da sua influ\u00eancia na heran\u00e7a, mem\u00f3ria, identidade, integra\u00e7\u00e3o e tradu\u00e7\u00e3o e intera\u00e7\u00e3o lingu\u00edstica e cultural, de modo a contribuir para a promo\u00e7\u00e3o de sociedades inclusivas, igualit\u00e1rias, equitativas e sustent\u00e1veis, com respeito pela diversidade.
O CLUP \u2013 Centro Lingu\u00edstica da Universidade do Porto convida \u00e0 apresenta\u00e7\u00e3o de investiga\u00e7\u00e3o original na \u00e1rea das Ci\u00eancias da Linguagem, sob a tem\u00e1tica geral do congresso. Ser\u00e3o aceites para apresenta\u00e7\u00e3o trabalhos em todas as \u00e1reas da lingu\u00edstica te\u00f3rica e da lingu\u00edstica aplicada, bem como de \u00e1reas interdisciplinares, incluindo, mas n\u00e3o exclusivamente, as seguintes \u00e1reas:
