Clarisse Prêtre

Clarisse Prêtre é antiga membro da École française d'Athènes (Escola Francesa de Arqueologia em Atenas) e Directora de Investigação no CNRS, Paris, França, em filologia e arqueologia do mundo grego-romano antigo na unidade de investigação «Anhima» («Anthropologie et Histoire des Mondes Antiques»). 

A sua formação inicial em gramática comparada permitiu-lhe estudar a terminologia dos ex-votos nos catálogos sagrados gregos do século II a.C., com o objectivo de identificar as características do sistema votivo grego. Interessou-se igualmente pelas práticas de curas miraculosas e desenvolveu investigações sobre a personalidade de Asclépio, cruzando fontes epigráficas e artefactos votivos. Graças à sua especialização em arqueologia, analisou um grande número de ex-votos encontrados durante escavações em diversos santuários gregos antigos, do século VI ao século I a.C. 

Nos últimos anos, o seu interesse pelos ex-votos alargou-se ao mundo moderno, e estudos comparativos entre a Grécia antiga, a Grécia moderna, a Itália moderna e a América do Sul permitiram-lhe aprofundar a sua reflexão sobre o sistema votivo e a perenidade dos ritos de dedicação desde a Antiguidade até aos nossos dias. 

Esta dupla competência filológica e arqueológica ultrapassa doravante o âmbito da bacia mediterrânica antiga para se enriquecer com investigações etnológicas sobre os rituais votivos do Brasil contemporâneo. É, com efeito, professora associada da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ, Brasil) e investigadora no Laboratório de Investigação sobre os Ex-votos da Universidade Federal de Salvador da Bahia (UFBA, Brasil), onde colabora no terreno, anualmente, no estudo da materialidade votiva popular numa perspectiva comparatista.

Clarisse Prêtre is former Member of the École française d'Athènes (Archaeological French School in Athens) and Research Director at the CNRS, Paris, France , in philology and archaeology of the ancient greco-roman world, within the research laboratory «Anhima» («Anthropologie et Histoire des Mondes Antiques»). 

Her primary training in comparative grammar enabled her to study the terminology of votive offerings in the greek sacred inventories of the second century BC, with a view to identifying the defining features of the Greek votive system. She has also devoted considerable attention to practices of miraculous healing and has conducted research into the figure of Asclepius, bringing together epigraphic sources and votive artefacts. Drawing on her specialisation in archaeology, she has analysed a substantial number of votive objects uncovered during excavations at various ancient Greek sanctuaries, spanning the 6th to the 1st century BC. 

In recent years, her interest in votive offerings has extended to the modern world, and comparative studies across ancient Greece, modern Greece, modern Italy, and South America have allowed her to refine her thinking on the votive system and the enduring continuity of dedicatory rites from Antiquity to the present day. 

This twofold philological and archaeological expertise now reaches beyond the ancient Mediterranean world to embrace ethnological fieldwork on votive rituals in contemporary Brazil. She is an Associate Professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ, Brazil) and a Researcher at the Laboratory for the Study of Votive Offerings at the Federal University of Salvador de Bahia (UFBA, Brazil), where she collaborates on-site every year in the study of popular votive materiality from a comparative perspective.
