The history of love letters offers a unique perspective on the relationship between discourse and technology. For more than two centuries, intimate communication has been shaped by changing media environments, from handwritten correspondence and postal systems to digital messaging platforms and, more recently, AI-generated texts. At the same time, love letters constitute an exceptional resource for investigating how discourse, identity, emotion, and social relationships are linguistically constructed across different technological settings. This plenary lecture I will present the Love Letter Archive as both a research object and a research infrastructure. The Love Letter Archive provides a particularly fruitful environment for reflecting on these issues, as it combines rich historical materials with innovative digital methods. By bringing together discourse studies, archival practice, citizen science, and AI-assisted research, the lecture argues that love letters constitute a privileged site for understanding both the history and the future of technologically mediated communication.
Los nuevos medios de comunicación digital suponen un desafío teórico-metodológico a los modelos vigentes de análisis del discurso, lo que obliga a un ajuste en la dinámica investigadora. La delimitación de tipos o géneros discursivos se hace cada vez más difícil por la hibridez de estos productos digitales. Igualmente, el análisis de la argumentación exige una nueva mirada por la multimodalidad inherente a este discurso, el empleo exacerbado en ocasiones de la emoción, la intensificación, las falacias o la polifonía textual. En esta ponencia se analizan comunicaciones en diferentes medios para mostrar el juego de estructuras y mecanismos argumentativos y las cuestiones que plantea al investigador.
