Alexandra Guedes Pinto

Ana Maria Brito

(BA in Romance Philology, 1974, University of Lisbon; PhD in Linguistics, 1988, University of Porto; Habilitation (“Agregação”) in Linguistics, 2003, University of Porto). She was Full Professor since 2004 to 31 December 2020; she is now a (retired) a Full Professor. At FLUP, where she was responsible for MA (2007-2019) and PhD programs in Linguistics and / or Sciences of Language (2014-2020). She is the author of three books and co-author of others, among them the Gramática da Língua Portuguesa, Caminho, Lisboa, 2003; she edited several books and she is the author of circa 140 papers and chapters of books in the areas of Portuguese Syntax, Comparative Syntax, the interfaces syntax-semantics and syntax-morphology and syntactic variation. Her main interests are the syntax of NP, possessives, complements and modifiers in NP, relative and interrogative clauses, ditransitive constructions, deverbal nominalizations, nominalized infinitives, comparative and consecutive constructions. Recently she is interested in morphosyntax of sign languages, in particular LGP (Portuguese sign language).      She was the President of the Portuguese Linguistics Association from 2008 to 2010. She regularly collaborates with FCT; she belongs to the scientific board of several journals and she has been invited to the scientific committee of many conferences in Linguistics. She supervised seven PhD (concluded) and more than 40 MA Dissertations.  She was the director of the jornal Linguística. Revista de Estudos Linguísticos da Universidade do Porto since 2010 to 2020.

Anette Kind

Ângela Carvalho

She has a degree in Modern Languages and Literatures (Portuguese/French) (2003), a specialisation in Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL) (2007), a Master’s degree in PFL (2009) and a PhD in Language Teaching (2014) (FLUP). She has been an Assistant Professor at FLUP since October 2015 and, since 2020, a Visiting Professor at the National University of Timor Lorosa’e. She coordinated the CAPLE exams at the FLUP application centre (2017-2021).

Since 2007, she has taught PFL at various institutions in Portugal and abroad and has collaborated in the training of PFL teachers at FLUP, foreign universities and the Portuguese Teaching Coordination of the Camões Institute. She collaborates in the training of teachers of Portuguese as a mother tongue at FLUP and has been a member of the Scientific Committee of the Master’s Degree in Teaching Portuguese in the 3rd Cycle of Basic Education and in Secondary Education since 2015, and has been a member of the Scientific Committee of the Master’s Degree in Teaching Portuguese as a Second/Foreign Language since 2022.

Research areas: Portuguese as a Foreign Language, Didactics, Language teacher training, Sustainable Development Goals and discourse analysis.

Fátima Oliveira

Fátima Oliveira is Full Professor at FLUP, retired since 05/2021 (BA in Romance Philology, 1974, University of Lisbon; PhD in Portuguese Linguistics, 1988, University of Porto; Habilitation (“Agregação”) in Linguistics, 2004, University of Porto). She was the director of Sciences of Language BA course (2007- 2019) and also MA Program (2019-2021), head of the Department of Portuguese Studies and Romance Studies (2012-2014) and elected member of the University General Council (2013-2017). She was also CLUP’s scientific coordinator (2005-2008) and member of the board (1998-2004).

As a researcher at CLUP, where she coordinates the semantics group, her research topics are mainly in Formal Semantics in sentence and discourse, sometimes in interface with Syntax or Pragmatics. Her fundamental interests have been on various topics, especially on Portuguese, but also in comparison with other languages: tense, aspect and modality in sentence and discourse, questions of genericity and nominal quantification, in particular semantics of indefinites, complex predicates (nominalizations and light verbs), stative and resultative constructions, and, more recently, on motion verbs and prepositions and weak definites. Lately, she is also interested in the comparison of Portuguese with typologically different languages, discourse markers and lexical issues associated with applications in natural language processing and sentiment analysis. He has participated in or coordinated several research projects. She supervised 20 PhD (16 concluded) and 40 (concluded) MA dissertations. 

Since 1998, she collaborated with FCT in several different evaluation panels. She is a member of the scientific board of various linguistics journals and many Linguistic conferences’ scientific committees.

Isabel Margarida Duarte

Full Professor of Linguistics, Aggregation in Linguistics (2021), Ph.D. in Linguistics (2000), Masters in Teaching the Portuguese Language (1990), and Degree in Romance Philology (1977), always from the University of Porto. Research areas: Pragmatics and discourse analysis (speech report, discursive markers, informal oral discourse); contrastive studies between Romance languages and application of Linguistics to teaching Portuguese (mother tongue and non-mother tongue). She is part of the TEXTDISC group. She is the author of more than 180 publications. Supervised 15 doctoral theses and 120 master’s theses. Director of the Master’s Degree in Portuguese as a Second Language / Foreign Language. Member of the Scientific Council, Vice-President of the Council of Representatives, and Local Erasmus Coordinator of FLUP.

Isabel Galhano Rodrigues

Isabel Galhano-Rodrigues, Ph.D. in Linguistics, is retired Professor at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto, Portugal, researcher at the Linguistics Centre of the University of Porto (CLUP), and collaborator of the Institute for Communication at the Nova University of Lisbon (ICNOVA). Her research interests began within the area of conversation/discourse analysis. In her PhD project, she pursued research on multimodality in face-to-face interaction, including coverbal kinesic units and prosody in the analysis of communicative events in European Portuguese. Her dissertation, O corpo e a fala [Body and speech] (2007), documents the reception of Gesture Studies in Portugal. Following ethnographic and cognitive approaches on multimodality in interaction, she has published studies on a range of topics, such as gesture space in different linguistic communities, gestures in conference interpreting, listing gestures, multimodal deixis, home signs of deaf children with cochlear implants, and foot gestures. She is President of the board and one of the founders of the Association iGesto – Investigação do Gesto (https://igesto.wordpress.com).

Juliana Novo Gomes

Luís Filipe Cunha

Luís Filipe Cunha graduated in Línguas e Literaturas Modernas, variante de Estudos Portugueses (Modern Languages and Literatures, Portuguese Studies) in Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto (Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto) in 1994. In the same institution, he completed a Master’s degree in Descriptive Portuguese Linguistics in 1998 and a PhD in Linguistics in 2004, with his dissertation on the semantics of stative predications: towards an aspectual characterisation of states. He is a member of Centre for Linguistics of the University of Porto since 1997, carrying out research in the area of semantics, with emphasis on studies related to tense and aspect. He has been awarded two post-doctoral scholarships by the Foundation for Science and Technology (2005-2011 and 2014-2019). Since May 2019 he has been an assistant researcher at FLUP, where he also teaches seminars as part of the Master’s programme in Linguistics. Currently, his research is mainly focused on issues related to the expression of posteriority relations, and he is also developing a project to adapt the Braille system to semantic formalisation.

Simone Auf der Maur Tomé

Simone Auf der Maur, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Porto (FLUP) and researcher at the Centre for Linguistics of University of Porto (CLUP) has a degree in modern languages and literature from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Zurich (Switzerland) and a Ph.D. in Language Teaching from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Porto with a thesis on the textual competence of specialized texts in the foreign language. She teaches Intercultural Communication and Didactics of German as a Foreign Language, trains teachers, and supervises the students in their teaching internship for the Master’s in Teaching at FLUP. She also assists trainees in writing their final traineeship reports. Her research areas relate to Teaching German as a Foreign Language and Intercultural Communication.

Vanessa Gomes Teixeira Anachoreta graduated in Languages and Literatures in the State University of Rio de Janeiro and finished her Master’s in the same faculty. In 2020, she obtained her Ph.D. in Science Languages in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto, and the following year, she completed the postgraduate program in Portuguese as a non-native language from NOVA University of Lisbon – School of Social Sciences and Humanities. Currently, she works as a researcher at the Centre for Linguistics of the University of Porto and as an invited assistant professor at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto. Her research interests are Linguistic Historiography and History of Linguistic Ideas with emphasis on the following themes: Portuguese for the Deaf, Grammatization of Languages, and Portuguese as a second language.
