The Centre for Linguistics of the University of Porto (CLUP) is a research centre hosted by the University of Porto. It is the only centre in Portugal’s northern region to focus exclusively on research in Linguistics. CLUP is financed by Portugal’s Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under FCT Projects UIDB/00022/2020 (DOI: 10.54499/UIDB/00022/2020) and UIDP/00022/2020 (DOI: 10.54499/UIDP/00022/2020).
Founded in 1976 by the renowned linguist and humanist Óscar Lopes, the centre has about seventy researchers, including doctoral students, post-doctoral grantees, and external collaborators, who explore a variety of areas and themes within phonology, syntax, semantics, lexis, discourse, applied psycholinguistics and language for specific purposes.
CLUP hosts one of Portugal’s most significant library collections in Linguistics as well as a number of electronic resources such as Corpógrafo, part of the Linguateca project. All resources are free and open to the academic community as well as the general public.
CLUP’s main objectives are: (a) further developing the research conducted at the centre in its various areas of interest, and (b) expanding research to other thematic areas, with special emphasis on cross-fertilisation among disciplines and approaches, such as, for example, Forensic Linguistics, Computational Linguistics and studies in Portuguese Sign Languages.
